CHECK MATE! FREE CHESS LESSONS FOR ISLANDERS OVER 50 - Island Echo - 24hr news, 7 days a week across the Isle of Wight
10 free chess lessons are being offered to the Over 50s on the Isle of Wight thanks to funding by WightAid. The lessons will be held on Saturday mornings between 11:00-12:00 in association with Chess in Schools & Communities and Age Concern Shanklin, who are hosting the lessons at their Regent Street base. Refreshments will be provided. This initiative has been very well received in other areas and the aim is to emphasise the importance of keeping an active mind as we get older, and learning chess could help ward off cognitive decline and help combat loneliness. Check mates - the easy to learn chess course will be held over 10 weeks from April 2020. Researchers have found a link between playing chess and reducing the possibility of developing dementia, AD, and other debilitating mental illnesses. In fact, people over the age of 75 that partake in leisure activities such as chess that stimulate the brain were less likely to develop signs of dementia.
