Assessing a Position

It is black to move. How should black proceed? Can black win this? In the actual game, due to time issues, So decided to take the draw by repetition by repeatedly checking from g3 and h3- a defensible choice.

Yup, you’re right. Thanks Yancey

I favored 1. ....Bxc5, but I think Alena has the better, cleaner idea of getting the queen to g3 first before capturing the pawn.

Eggman, that line is a blunder at move 2 for black, and probably even the 1. ....Qg4 part is inaccurate. After 1. ...Qg4 2.Qg4 e2+, white captures the bishop at d4 with check to win easily.

I also think that Qg4 wins fairly quickly.... 1 .... Qg4. 2 Qxg4 e2+! 3 Kh2 hxg4 4 Rxd2 e1=Q. They could trade bishops or not at that point, but black has won the exchange. There are variations... if white plays 3 Qxd4? Black can respond with 3 ... exd1=Q+ 4 Kh2 Qe2+, followed by 5 .... d1=Q, and black has won.

How does Q-g4 win immediately? After the queen exchange, Bxd2 and the outcome is not clear but at my level it would probably be drawn.

  1. ... Qg4+ wins immediately.
