Rook and pawn endgame can be tricky

Black to move. What should be black’s plan?

This was an actual game between Yip and Williams

No. 1-2

Too many variations to post, but here’s the general outline.

First, …b5 to fix White’s pawns. (If White plays a4 to get a passer, take on a4 and play the King back to stop the b pawn as needed, for example, 1. … b5 2. a4 bxa4 3. b5 Ke5 4. b6 Kd6 5. Rc3 Rxh4 6. b7 Rh2+ and 7. … Rb2.)

Now, White really doesn’t want to move. Any Rook move off of the h-file invites …Rxh4, and any move off of the 3rd rank invites …e3+. Any move of White’s King to the 1st rank invites …e3, and any move of it to the e file invites …Rg2+.

Overload White’s defenses against advance of Black’s e pawn, b pawn, and the g & h pawn duo.
