This is one of those endgame you need to know the pattern for

White to move. Is this a win or draw for white? How should white proceed?

  1. Kg6. Black cannot play 1. ... Kf8 because of 2. Rf1 (then is 2. ... Kg8 3. Ra1 with mate threat or rook will be lost, and if Ke8 then 3. Kg7 and going for a kind of Lucena position). We try to get a position with white king on Kg8 and pawn on g7. If 1. ... Ra7 then 2. g5 going closer to quenning square

It is tempting to cut off the black king with 1.Rf1, but you have to realize that 1.Rf1 Rg8+! is a draw because the white king can't advance without leaving the pawn to die.
