White to move! How should white proceed?
First Qf6 Kg8 then Rd2 White has winning chances -
- Rf7 Qxf7 2. Qxd8 Kg7 (... Qg8 3. Qxc7 Nxd1 4. Rxd1) 3. Rd2 and black looks to be in trouble
- Rd2 looks like the right idea. 1...Nc5 loses the protector of the d-pawn, allowing 2. Qf6+ Kg8 3. R:d3 and the Ne6 falls with check, and White wins quickly.
1...Nd5 2. Q:e5+ picks up the Nb2 and Black's king is still endangered.
1...Ne6 and the same idea applies.
There may be quicker wins, since moving the Q away from the battle for a mere piece seems wrong, but that Knight is a vital cog in Black's counterplay.
I looked at this last night and again this afternoon- I think white has to play 1.Rd2 here. I wanted to play 1.Qf6 check and 2.Rf5, but I can't solve the problem of 2....Ne6. Still need to work this all out, though.
