PORTLAND, Ore. – Chess wizzes from local middle and high schools met in Southeast Portland Saturday for competition at Harrison Park School.

The matches were put on by the nonprofit group Chess for Success; their goal is to help children succeed by learning the game.

“It involves a lot of ... you have to use your head a lot. It's more than just physical,” said Breslin, one of the competitors.

The kids involved in the program say they really look forward to these tournaments.

The winners from Saturday’s competition have to qualify in at least one other qualifying tournament in order to head to the Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation’s State Chess Tournament in May.
