Serious cash at stake today as top four vie for first place before the semis

The world champion, his last challenger, the world’s strongest speed chess player, and the world number 3 battle it out today to see who will top the leaderboard in the richest online chess tournament ever seen.

All eight players will face-off today in The Magnus Carlsen Invitational’s final regulation. After today, the $250,000 tournament will go to the semi-final stage.

There is currently a three-way tie for the lead with Carlsen, the tournament host, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana one point ahead of Ding Liren.

All four are assured of their place in the semis and only have the top spot and first stage final placing prize money to play for. Serious cash is at stake.

Of today’s match-ups, Ding vs Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi vs Alireza Firouzja are perhaps the most eagerly anticipated.

Meanwhile, Nakamura plays the Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Caruana faces Anish Giri.

Coverage begins with pre-match analysis each day at 15.00 with the action kicking off at 16.00 CEST.
