If you’re having trouble cracking the Poidsear Coast Chess Puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy, you’re not alone. This puzzle, located in one of the region’s Treasure Vaults, is considered one of the most challenging and unique trials in the game. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to solve it, including the spells required and how to unlock them.
Location of the Puzzle
The Treasure Vault in question is found at the northeastern edge of the Poidsear Coast, just east of the Phoenix Mountain Cave Floo Flame. Once you arrive at the entrance, you’ll see a locked gate controlled by two rotating mechanisms.
Opening the Vault
To unlock the gate, use the Depulso spell on both rotating devices. Cast Depulso repeatedly until each mechanism locks into place. There’s no need to use Arresto Momentum or any other spell to stop the rotation—they’ll hold their position automatically once aligned correctly.
To learn Depulso, you’ll need to complete Professor Sharp’s Assignment 1. This assignment involves brewing and using three essential combat potions: Maxima, Edurus, and Focus. After completing the assignment and attending Sharp’s Potion Class, you’ll gain access to the spell.
The Chessboard Puzzle
Once inside, you’ll encounter a large chessboard occupying the floor of the room. Activate Revelio to highlight a white pot located at the back of the room. This pot is the key to solving the puzzle.
Use the Transformation spell on the pot to turn it into a usable chess piece. Transformation is one of the last spells you can learn in the game, acquired through Professor Weasley’s Assignment. Complete her task and attend her Transfiguration Class to add it to your spell list.
The transformed pot can become either a Bishop or a Rook, depending on your game instance.
Final Piece Placement
If the pot turns into a Bishop, use Wingardium Leviosa to move it directly in front of your Queen piece.
If it becomes a Rook, position it two spaces to the right of the black King.
You can learn Wingardium Leviosa from Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1, which requires using both Venomous Tentacula and Mandrake plants in combat scenarios. Once completed, you’ll be taught the levitation spell.
Unlocking the Treasure
When the correct piece is placed in the proper position, you’ll deliver checkmate to the opposing side. The black King will shatter dramatically, revealing the hidden treasure chest beneath it.
This concludes the puzzle and rewards you with loot that makes the effort worthwhile. With the right spells and precise positioning, even one of the most intricate puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy can be mastered.
